Equipment: 1 ball, 2 baskets, bibs for two teams

How to run the drill

  1. 1Setup: play 3v3 full court. Each team attacks a designated basket. Backwards means the pass receiver catches further from the attacking baseline than the passer was when releasing the ball. Explain the direction before starting.
  2. 2Start: check the ball in the backcourt. The ballhandler advances by dribbling towards their attacking basket. Teammates move behind the ball to offer legal passing targets.
  3. 3Rules: passes must travel backwards relative to the attacking direction; sideways or forward passes are turnovers. Dribble moves may go sideways to evade pressure, but the ballhandler cannot dribble back towards their own baseline. Shots are unrestricted and are not treated as passes.
  4. 4Scoring and reset: use normal 2- and 3-point scoring. A steal or defensive rebound starts transition immediately with the new direction of attack. After a made basket, inbound from the baseline; the inbound pass is exempt from the backwards rule. After a violation or ball out, check at the nearest sideline with defenders 2 metres away; that check is also exempt.
  5. 5Rotation: play three-minute games. Change matchups or substitute teams after each game; keep both teams moving on every possession.
  6. 6Progression: use 2v2 for more space or play on a shorter court. Restore normal passing for the final minute and look for the same supporting movement behind the ball.

Coaching points

  • Support behind the ball rather than running beyond it
  • Receive ready to attack forward
  • Call for the pass before pressure traps the ballhandler
