How to run the drill

  1. 1Setup: the defender starts inside the restricted-area arc under the basket. The attacker holds a ball within one pivot of a short finish, initially just outside the arc. Keep spare players clear of the landing space.
  2. 2Start: the attacker says ready, then has four seconds to finish. The defender may take one step from their starting stance and contest vertically, but cannot jump or take further steps in the base version.
  3. 3Rules: no attacking dribbles. Use a legal pivot, fake or step-through. The defender keeps hands up and avoids swiping down. The first shot ends the attempt; neither player plays through the rebound.
  4. 4Scoring and reset: each make earns the attacker 1 point. Retrieve the rebound, move the attacker to a different side of the rim and let the defender reset inside the arc. Fit as many controlled attempts as possible into a one-minute block.
  5. 5Rotation: swap offense and defense after one minute. Compare makes after equal attacking time; repeat from different angles.
  6. 6Progression: allow the defender one vertical jump, or expand the starting area and give the attacker one dribble. Add only one of these changes at a time.
