Equipment: 1 ball per pair, 1 basket

How to run the drill

  1. 1Setup: the defender stands above the arc facing the basket. The attacker stands immediately behind them and lightly holds the ball against the defender's lower back. Both players know the starting position; there is no push or bump.
  2. 2Start: the attacker removes the ball and begins a dribble to either side. The defender reacts as soon as they feel the ball leave their back, turns and tries to recover.
  3. 3Rules: the attacker has three dribbles and six seconds to shoot. The defender cannot look behind or move before the ball leaves their back. Defend from the side with controlled contact; do not push a player from behind.
  4. 4Scoring and reset: the first shot ends the rep. A made basket within the limits earns the attacker 1 point; a miss, violation or clean steal earns the defender 1 point. Retrieve the ball and reset above the arc.
  5. 5Rotation: swap roles after every rep. After four reps, change the starting angle to either wing. Play first to five points.
  6. 6Progression: allow only two dribbles, or remove the dribble limit once both players can create and recover from the initial advantage.

Coaching points

  • Attack the space beside the defender
  • Keep the first dribble away from the recovery hand
  • Defender: turn, sprint and get alongside before contesting
