How to run the drill
- 1Setup: one passer starts on the wing with a ball. An attacker starts just outside the restricted-area arc; a defender starts inside it. The arc is the small semicircle immediately below the rim.
- 2Start: the passer calls go. The attacker has three seconds to establish a legal position, show a target and receive a pass close to the rim. In this base version the defender can move within the arc and contest the entry, but cannot leave it before the catch.
- 3Rules: on the catch, the defender becomes fully live and may leave the arc. The attacker has one dribble and three seconds to finish. Use balanced positioning rather than holding or pushing. If no entry is available, call reset and leave the lane before the next attempt.
- 4Scoring and reset: a made first shot earns the attacker 1 point. A denied entry, intercepted pass, miss or violation earns the defender 1 point. The first shot ends the rep; rebound and return the ball to the wing.
- 5Rotation: after three reps, attacker becomes defender, defender becomes passer and passer becomes attacker. Repeat until everyone has attacked from both wings.
- 6Progression: let the defender front or deny without the starting restriction. Add a fourth player to defend the passer once the three-player game is clear.
Coaching points
- Show the passer a clear target
- Seal with feet and body position, without holding
- Pass to the hand away from the defender
More finishing drills
1v1 Blind Start
An attacker starts behind a defender who cannot see the ball. Removing the ball from the defender's back triggers a live chase to the rim.
1v1 No-Dribble Rim Finishing
Finish using pivots and fakes against a defender allowed just one step near the rim. Change the starting angle after every attempt.
Elbow Race Finishing
Two lines at the elbows run to the rim; whoever the coach passes to finishes while the other one defends.
