How to run the drill

  1. 1Setup: mark two gates, each about 1 metre wide, just inside the arc on opposite sides of the key. One attacker with a ball starts above the arc, centred between them. The defender starts between the gates, closer to the basket.
  2. 2Start: the attacker takes a first dribble towards the gates. Before the attacker reaches them, the defender steps fully into either gate. That commitment releases both players into live 1v1.
  3. 3Rules: the attacker must pass through the unoccupied gate before shooting. The defender may leave their chosen gate and recover as soon as they have stepped into it. The attacker has three dribbles total, including the approach dribble.
  4. 4Scoring and reset: a basket through the correct gate within three dribbles earns the attacker 1 point. A stop, wrong gate or extra dribble earns the defender 1 point. The first shot ends the rep; collect the rebound without continuing play.
  5. 5Rotation: swap roles after every rep. Reset all the way above the arc. Play first to five points, then change partners.
  6. 6Progression: bring the gates closer together or allow a later defensive commitment. For beginners, use four dribbles and a larger head start.

Coaching points

  • See the defender before choosing your route
  • Keep the approach dribble under control
