Equipment: 1 ball per group of three, 1 basket, seven-second timer or spoken count
How to run the drill
- 1Setup: one passer at the top, one attacker on a wing and one defender within arm's length of the attacker. The passer delivers the entry and counts seven seconds aloud from the catch.
- 2Start: the catch makes the 1v1 live. Play until a made basket, turnover, defensive rebound or seven seconds. Offensive rebounds continue within the original clock.
- 3Offensive scoring: award only the highest applicable reward: 3 points for an uncontested layup with the defender no longer able to challenge; 2 for another rim finish or a made three-pointer; 1 for any other made shot.
- 4Defensive scoring: award only one reward if offense does not score: 3 points for a turnover or clock expiry before a shot; 2 for a blocked shot followed by defensive possession or clock expiry; 1 for any other stop. An out-of-bounds defensive deflection restarts with the time remaining, not a new seven seconds.
- 5Reset and rotation: record the possession's single score, then attacker becomes defender, defender becomes passer and passer becomes attacker. Return to the wing for each rep. Play three complete rotations before comparing scores.
- 6Progression: change the catching location each rotation or add one pass back to the facilitator before attacking again, keeping the original seven-second clock.
Coaching points
- Attack an advantage as soon as you catch
- Defender: finish the stop by securing the ball
- Count clearly and apply only one reward per possession
