Equipment: 1 ball, 1 basket, bibs for two pairs
How to run the drill
- 1Setup: an attacker with the ball starts above the arc with their defender. A teammate and second defender start on a wing. Agree one coverage before the round, such as switch (exchange matchups) or drop (the screener's defender stays nearer the basket while the on-ball defender follows).
- 2Start: the wing attacker comes to set a stationary ball screen. The screener's defender must call their teammate's name, the screen direction and the agreed coverage before the ballhandler reaches the screen. For example: Sam, screen left, switch.
- 3Rules: in the base game, the screener must hold a legal stationary screen. They cannot slip away before the screen or change its angle at the last moment. Play the 2v2 live after the screen approach; offense may reject the screen. Finish within ten seconds of the screen call.
- 4Scoring and reset: offense earns 1 point for a basket. Defense earns 1 point for a stop, plus 1 communication point only if the complete call came before the screen and both defenders attempted the agreed coverage. A call alone does not earn a point on a scoring possession.
- 5Rotation: play three possessions with the same pair defending, alternating the ballhandler and screener each time. Then pairs swap roles. Reset above the arc after each score, defensive rebound, violation or clock expiry.
- 6Progression: let offense slip or change the screen angle, or allow defenders to choose between two learned coverages. Require the same early communication.
Coaching points
- Name, direction, coverage before the screen arrives
- Both defenders must act on the same call
- Finish the stop with a rebound
